About Katy DBT

what is the mission of  the Katy DBT Center?

The mission of the Katy DBT Center is to provide anyone in the state of Texas with adherent DBT in an online format that you can access from anywhere in Texas. The Katy DBT Center was founded in 2016 by Joe Pentony. It follows in the tradition of the Houston DBT Center in striving for excellence of care and precision in the treatment of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). We require all of our therapists to be experienced and well-trained in the implementation of DBT.

DBT is known to be very effective for those struggling with very intense emotions—whether you have a mental health diagnosis or not. Research shows that DBT has been used successfully to treat people experiencing anxiety, depression, bulimia, binge eating, bipolar disorder, PTSD and substance abuse.

MEET OUR PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Joe Pentony, LPC,
is a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician.  Joe received his Master’s in Counseling from The Houston Graduate School of Theology in 2007, where he learned the role of healthy, balanced spirituality in mental wellness. During his last year studying for his master’s degree, he volunteered at American Hospice where he used his knowledge of scripture and spirituality to help those facing death and dying. He then began working at MHMRA and Westbury Community Hospital with a population of patients with severe schizophrenia, bipolar, high suicidality and hospitalization rates.

Joe received his training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy in 2009 and receives ongoing training. He was pleased to put his interest in mindfulness-based therapies to use at the Houston DBT Center, where led the adult and adolescent intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for 8 years. Joe continues to lead DBT and RO-DBT outpatient groups and the adolescent summer intensive programs at the Katy DBT Center.

In the summer of 2016, Joe led a team of DBT therapists to start the Katy DBT Center to provide high-quality and adherent DBT and RO-DBT to individuals in Katy, TX. Since then, the practice has grown to serve people across Texas. Joe works collaboratively with a team of therapists and psychiatrists to ensure the best possible care for his clients.

FAQs

Do you accept my insurance?

We do not take any insurances, we are an “out of network” facility. If you want to use your insurance you will want to see if they cover out of network mental health services. Fees start at $180/week.

How does the online format work?

We use a combination of Zoom for video sessions and Roll20, an interactive platform that brings the Dungeons & Dragons world to life. Your teen will join a small group of peers, along with a licensed DBT therapist and an experienced Dungeon Master, all from the comfort of home. No special equipment is required—just a computer and internet connection.

Will my teen still develop real-life skills through an online program?

Absolutely. While the sessions are online, the skills learned are very real. Our program integrates DBT techniques like emotion regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness into each session. Your teen will work through real-world challenges in a safe, structured environment, all while building social confidence and problem-solving abilities with their peers.

Is this program effective for teens who struggle with social anxiety?

Yes. One of the biggest benefits of using Dungeons & Dragons in therapy is that it provides a structured, low-pressure environment where teens can practice social interaction and communication skills without the stress of face-to-face settings. This format allows your teen to gradually build confidence while interacting with others in a fun, supportive way.

How is this different from traditional therapy?

Our program is designed to be engaging and fun, using a game-based approach to help teens develop essential life skills. The Dungeons & Dragons element adds creativity and teamwork to the mix, making therapy feel more like a collaborative experience rather than a formal session. This unique approach helps teens feel more relaxed and open to learning, which leads to better outcomes.

Will my teen need any prior knowledge of Dungeons & Dragons?

Not at all! Whether your teen has played before or is brand new to Dungeons & Dragons, our Dungeon Masters will guide them through everything they need to know. The focus is on using the game to foster teamwork and emotional growth, so no prior experience is required.
